Week 2

I enjoy studying in the library but right now it’s very haphazard. I go when I feel like it. Which is usually 2-3 days a week after my lectures. Think that’s fine for now. If my motivation drops then I’ll probably create a schedule and follow that.

I very much enjoyed my visit to Stonehenge this week! It’s not the most visually pleasing monument but that’s not the point. It’s baffling how such a large piece of stone was put on top of these other larger stones. And the stones were transported there from afar.

We, humans, should sometimes admit our shortcomings and at least admit that we don’t know the answers. I saw a video by English Heritage that said it was “obviously” not built by aliens. Hell naw fam. It’s not obvious. We don’t know how it was built. The possibility of Stonehenge being built by aliens is higher than it being built by humans.

Most of my lectures are on Monday and Tuesday. This is great actually. New topics get introduced at the start and I have the entire week to absorb and play around with it.

Not enough time to browse Hacker News. I love that website. Any sort of place that has passionate people discussing/arguing is great. Passion is in rare supply in today’s world.

Me and Yousuf delivered the second workshop for web development. I am very happy with how it went. I spoke slowly and maintained a decent pace. Our learning materials were also structured. Apparently slides do help when you’re giving a presentation.

I bought ground coffee by Lavazza to use with my French Press. I don’t like it at all. It doesn’t taste very good. I can’t pinpoint why. I’ll need to try something else.

I haven’t shipped a side project in a while now. Probably 3-4 months. I have a backlog of ideas that would be interesting to work on. I just haven’t started on them. Though I would need to plan my schedule to fit them in along with my studies.

I should control my urge to start talking about Vim in the middle of the conversation. This has happened a few times already and I sense most people don’t feel passionately about text editors.

There was a programming contest that James told me about. I initially joined his team along with George. Me and James had a problem solving session together and it became clear that I am not ready for it yet. I wasn’t able to contribute much to the discussion while we were solving the problem. I have withdrawn from the group. I was hoping for a fun group based programming activity but James is serious and wants to win so our goals don’t align.

I emailed Dr Willem Heijltjes to introduce myself and tell him how I’m excited to study Functional Programming in Semester 2.

We had a 1 minute presentation for the Research Seminar where we talked about our observations for a research paper we were assigned. It went well. We were a group of 5 and each one only spoke a sentence or two due to time constraints.

Diet Coke without caffiene is top-tier.

I need to buy a jacket. I was telling myself that I am immune to cold and going to uni in a t-shirt. That’s not how it works.
